Temperament Testing

With Temperament Testing, we evaluate how a dog behaves toward people, responds to stress, and how they react to their environment. This can be a very useful tool in many situations - potential pet parents looking to adopt a new dog, Service Dog or Therapy Dog organizations searching for the right candidate to train for their clients, ESA owners wanting to fully know their dog, or even breeders wanting to make sure they place their puppies in the right homes. Based on the dog’s responses, we can learn more about their personality and how they will likely fit into a new living or working situation. 

Some questions that can be answered are:

• Do they enjoy the company of people?
• Do they enjoy the company of other dogs or animals?
• What might their needs be in terms of physical and mental stimulation?
• Do they exhibit confidence or fear when around new people, things, or situations?
• Will their overal personality be well suited for where they may be going?
• Do they hold focus on the person their with?
• What is their drive or motivation?
• What sense of theirs is heightened?
• Are they okay with being touched, handled, or picked up?

As I’m sure you can tell, these are all useful questions when it comes to making sure the dog or puppy ends up in the right place for them, and all of them together paint a good picture of past and future behavior as well as their individual personality.

It isn’t an exact science though and unfortunately there is no guarantee that the dog absolutely won’t have future issues, as new environment changes or changes due to growth also play a huge roll when it comes to how a dog adjusts to their new space. For puppies around 6 months of younger, this can be especially true as they are going through a lot of changes themselves and that can have a huge impact in how they mature and develop.

When providing Temperament Testing, we typically spend around 15-30 minutes, sometimes longer, evaluating every aspect that we can to help paint a larger picture. If between an entire litter, we will evaluate each puppy of interest, but please make sure the breeder or rescue has given permission in order for us to do so. We will provide in-depth detail on results to give you a better idea of what’s best for you. Please note that due to their age and development, puppies must be at least 7 weeks old for us to provide a Temperament Test with optimum results.
